Subject: Dr. Jackie Alan Giuliano could learn a lot from a dummy: STOP CASSINI #162

Date: August 4th, 1999

Time Frame: Cassini is scheduled to do the flyby of Earth in less than two weeks -- on August 18th, 1999 (August 17th in the USA) near Africa.

Today's Subjects:

(NOTE: This issue of this newsletter is particularly important! It is jockeying for position during the upcoming media blitz! Giuliano has made what, despite its haste, appears to be a very calculated attack on my credibility within the movement, in an attempt to marginalize my efforts within the STOP CASSINI movement itself, in order to fool the media (again) as to who is who and what is what. Others will surely follow and in fact, are undoubtedly committing such treacherous actions right now in private, "off the record" conversations. Else where would Giuliano have gotten the idea I am so disliked? Read on, dear reader, and be thankful Giuliano has brought out this wretched facet of the battle for all to see. My deepest thanks to all who, perhaps unknowingly at the time, have herein helped me defend myself against his outrageous charges.)

(1) Dr. Jackie Alan Giuliano could learn a lot from a dummy:

It doesn't appear that Dr. Giuliano likes me very much. Last issue we published a pro-Cassini statement written by him which we saw in Radiation Bulletin (RADBULL). This morning when we got up (late as usual these days, having retired in the wee hours) we had his answer, which arrived less than 6 hours after the newsletter went out. We appreciate his haste, but caution readers to remember that in general "haste makes nuclear waste". His letter is uncut, with our comments interspersed in [[[ italics and triple brackets ]]] .

Subject: Re: Sample letter to editors & a response to Jackie Giuliano: STOP CASSINI #161, August 3rd, 1999

Dear Mr. Hoffman,

If you would stop your name calling and screaming fear-mongering long enough to take a breath and read, you might learn how to better deal with NASA from my article [[[ What a powerful, loquacious opening salvo! This is going to be good! ]]] . You have many fundamental misunderstandings about spaceflight [[[ Note: He provides no proof of this assumption anywhere in the rest of his retort. ]]] . That is why you have been so ineffective in achieving your goal over these years. Screaming about conspiracy theories and who is the bad guy gets you nowhere. [[[ Well, now he tells me I have been ineffective! I'm sorry I have been ineffective, but I doubt the reasons are as he says. And note too, he claims we have practically succeeded, later on! So which is it? Effective or ineffective? ]]] .

Throwing around numbers like you do just confuses the issue [[[ Hah! If I don't use numbers I would be accused of saying nothing solid! If I use numbers, then I am accused of confusing the issue! Clearly, Dr. Giuliano prefers this conversation not be able to be applied to real-world situations, which need real numbers to make any sense. ]]] . Of course the spacecraft will disintegrate if it hits the Earth under certain circumstances. [[[ Finally he admits that his "9 pounds" might be make-believe! ]]] The issue is not whether or not plutonium will be released or how many will die (more fear mongering), the issue is whether or not it is likely that the spacecraft will hit the Earth at all. [[[ This is utterly incorrect. The issue IS how many might die from a reentry accident. ]]] Get people focused on preventing these things in the future. [[[ He presumably means the Earth-flyby, not the launch, or the continued military use of RTGs. ]]]

DS1 did not screw up and point the camera incorrectly. [[[ Yes it did. ]]] If you had really learned about spaceflight over the years, you would know that getting to an object in the solar system and then pointing to a surface feature [[[ actually, the whole asteroid was the target. ]]] is THE biggest challenge of them all. These objects are not even visible from Earth and retargeting is necessary all along the way [[[ ALL spacecraft are constantly "retargeted" a little bit, throughout their fights. ]]] . Pointing a camera at an object while going tens of thousands of miles per hour is a challenge you don't seem to understand. [[[ Pointing a camera is a matter of being able to aim something in the right direction. Just like pointing a gun or an airplane or a football or Cassini. ]]]

There is no way to know what Cassini's final velocity will be as it passes the Earth until very close to the time of encounter. There are many variables. The current estimate is 10 miles per second (that's where my number comes from). The estimates in your various newsletters and articles are based on the early pre launch estimates. But this is not the point you should be arguing. [[[ I only pointed out that the velocity YOU gave (36,000 mph) was way, way off. I realize it might be 43,100 mph or 42,300 mph without much difficulty, but 36,000? Where did you come up with that number? Where did you come up with 500 watts? I still say those sound like numbers you dug up from Galileo. ]]]

You allow yourself to get into numbers battles with engineers - a no win situation. They will always have another study or point of view to throw at you. [[[ Agreed; it's a difficult game. That is why I have been asking these pro-Cassini folks if there is some limit to their mad-scientist ideas. If 400,000 Curies if alright with Dr. Giuliano, would 4,000,000 Curies for the exact same experiment likewise please him? 40,000,000 Curies? Whether Giuliano realizes it or not, it IS a numbers game! We have to establish real numerical limits for NASA and the current and future RTGs/RPSs are way beyond any reasonable limits. ]]]

Try focusing on the future [[[ Gee, what does he think I've been doing? ]]] . Take the info in my piece and learn the real challenges of spaceflight and work to eliminate these launches in the future. [[[ Ho hum. He thinks he said something brilliant in that essay we presented. I must have missed it, I guess. We can easily "work to eliminate these launches" by banning nuclear payloads entirely. I was ready to say (and have been saying) that .001 Curies would be a reasonable limit, above which complete disclosure and international approval and cooperation must be obtained. But Dr. Giuliano has convinced me that it is probably better not to play a "numbers game" at all with these guys. I think a 100 year moratorium is the proper policy. Pluto et al aren't going anywhere.]]]

You are closer than you know to the goal of no Earth-flybys and an elimination of radioisotope power sources [[[ Again we hear the rumor that there will be no more Earth flybys, which is NOT our only goal! The launches too, especially the late stages of the launches, are also extremely dangerous. As to his claim that we have somehow gotten close to the goal of eliminating Radioisotope Power Sources, NASA has given no such indication whatsoever. ]]]. I don't think you even realize it because you are so focused on getting everyone to agree with everything you say [[[ Actually, I don't "realize" it because it's never been officially said, and as I just stated, it's only one relatively small part of the problem. ]]]. You come off as badly as the engineers by insisting that everything you say is absolutely true and correct. [[[ Wow! Of course I insist the everything I say is SUPPOSED TO BE absolutely true and correct! I'm trying to write the truth, and if it isn't the truth, it isn't because I don't think it is! And, NO ONE can come off as badly as NASA's engineers. It just isn't possible. ]]]

You are not respected by your opponents or by other activists [[[ Oh well. That leaves only my friends. ]]]. You deny the humanity of your opponents [[[ Wow! Who's assassinating characters now? ]]] and resort to character assassinations [[[ Actually, he assassinated his own character when he published his document. ]]] and name calling [[[ This is the pot calling the kettle black. ]]]. Learn about the issues you are fighting and get off of the hypothetical numbers focus. [[[ His suggestion that I haven't learned about the issues during the creation of the past 161 issues of this newsletter, during scores of interviews with opposition scientists, during numerous space and technology conferences I have attended, through thousands of emails from engineers and others on both sides of the debate, from SPACE NEWS and a wide variety of Internet sources, from representative books published throughout the century, and during the reading of hundreds of pages in dozens of government documents is interesting, but unproven. ]]]

And read my next piece - you might learn something: if you stop screaming. [[[ You might learn something if you stop writing meaningless trash and start reading the opposition viewpoints more carefully, Dr. Giuliano. ]]]

This man clearly has not said a thing, but is very full of himself over it. As to his accusations that I am not well liked by activists or opponents, all I can say is it ain't cuz I haven't tried to be charming. Some people are just better at it than others, I guess.

NOTE: The editor of the STOP CASSINI newsletter did misspeak in his letter to Dr. Giuliano. Rosetta, the comet-chaser from the European Space Agency, will go out as far as Jupiter, NOT as far as Cassini. However, Dr. Michio Kaku has previously stated that a slightly smaller mission to Saturn than the bloated Cassini mission COULD have been solar and in 1981, solar missions to Jupiter were already possible, according to the NASA/JPL report prepared by D. E. Rockey, et al. So although I misspoke about Rosetta, it still is a 10 year mission and all the arguments used for the Galileo Jupiter probe are proven null and void by it and other subsequent events. Without question, within 10 years, solar-powered missions as far as Saturn will not only be possible, they will be happening either by the United States or by someone else.

(2) Jonathan Mark Haber apparently disagrees with Dr. J.A.G.:

Jonathan is the director of the NOFLYBY web site (http://www.nonviolence.org/noflyby/)

----- INCOMING EMAIL FROM JONATHAN MARK, AUGUST 2ND, 1999 -----

At 08:51 AM 8/2/99 -0400, Jonathan Mark (noflyby@nonviolence.org) wrote:

Russell, i just wanted to let you know that i appreciate most all of your work and expression, and believe our sites are compatible and help one another.. i have signed you up again with noflyby feedback.

thanks,

jonathan

----- END OF INCOMING EMAIL FROM JONATHAN MARK HABER, AUGUST 2ND, 1999 -----

---- MY RESPONSE: -----

Your comments couldn't have come at a better time, Jonathan. Thanks. That leaves just three to go to totally unite the movement. I hope we can do it.

----- END OF MY RESPONSE -----

Of course, I could have gotten all mushy and teary-eyed at this wonderful new development, but we don't have time for that and I don't think Jonathan does either. There's so much work yet to be done, and less than two weeks to do it in. If Dr. Giuliano is right that NASA is wavering on the fence regarding the nuclear issues, then surely a reunited movement can knock them over (on the proper side).

(3) F. R. Sarker doesn't sound very angry at me, either:

F. R. Sarker is the Secretary General for the Bangladesh Astronomical Society.

We will do a complete issue on the wonderful things that Mr. Sarker has been doing, and all that has been happening in Bangladesh, where a solid and honorable anti-Cassini movement has been forming. In the meantime, there's this clip for Dr. Giuliano:

(4) Nor does Hans Karow, Karl Grossman, Elizabeth Picard, etc.

These comments are all recent, but not very recent, meaning they don't happen to refer to the last newsletter, or current topics:

----- FROM HANS KAROW: -----

"Russell ... I send [a friend] a copy of your excellent last newsletter -- man, you did a good job! In some quiet minutes I will have to read it again maybe twice!- asking him also whether he receives your newsletter. Okay, I will try to convince him to check also your web site and that he his referring your web site as well."

----- FROM ELIZABETH PICARD: -----

"wow, hoff. Just read your letter to Jeff N. ... you have a brilliant mind. don't waste it on the 'small minds'. save it for the 'big stuff'!" [[[ I wonder if she is disappointed that I'm "wasting" it on Dr. Giuliano! ]]]

----- FROM KARL GROSSMAN: -----

"It's an honor working with you."

----- FROM PERRY KEIDEL (REGARDING A RECENT ARTICLE HE WROTE) -----

"I'm glad you approve of this short stop cassini piece. That means I got my details right. AND THANKS FOR THAT QUOTE"

----- END OF CLIPS FROM SOME STOP-CASSINI MOVEMENT LEADER'S COMMENTS ABOUT YH&OS -----

Of course, Dr. Jackie Alan Giuliano can undoubtedly find others who wish to tear me apart just as he himself has tried to do, who, one would have hoped, would have been on my side. But sad to say, we can't all be liked by everyone, and I'm sorry I can't please more people. I'm sure Mr Revere ALSO had people yelling out their windows to him, "Shaddup already, for cryin' out loud! So what if the British are coming? We're all British here anyway, aren't we? Go back to bed!"

"Fear mongering" and "alerting people to a clear and present threat to their lives" are two very, very different things. After Cassini, and even now, the threat I think people should MOST concern themselves with is Y2K. That is why I have designed a Y2K home page at the following URL:

http://www.animatedsoftware.com/environm/no_nukes/y2k/index.htm

It includes an article on how to prepare your family for Y2K, which I will be greatly expanding and augmenting in the coming weeks. I am starting that campaign NOW because anyone who WANTS to be prepared had better start preparing NOW, otherwise, others who moved sooner will have purchased all the supplies, like wind-up radios and so forth! And of course, I am starting it NOW because right now, people are reading these newsletters by the thousands, or tens of thousands, or maybe even more.

I am a bell-ringer, sure. It looks like I rang Giuliano's this morning. But I am not a fear-monger. And that is why I am continuing my own slant on the Y2K issue, namely: Make Y2K a Family Day.

Family is wherever you find them, by the way. The family of humanity. If you try to protect others, you protect yourself.

(5) A smattering of comments from STOP CASSINI newsletter subscriber's letters:

Actually, perhaps Dr. Jackie Alan Giuliano is right -- that I have performed a disservice to the movement.

Fortunately, comments such as those shown above, as well as those shown below, have given me strength and courage to face people like Jackie Alan Giuliano, Ph.D. despite my own many misgivings about what I do and how I go about it, not to mention as well, Giuliano's stated disgust, which does not please me, but seems utterly unavoidable:

"Thanks for what you are doing, hope to make it thru these next couple of weeks. I have been worried for 2 years as I'm sure you have been. "

"I have not seen much in print on the subject; thus I am delighted to subscribe to your newsletter. Thank you very much."

"Please add me to your subscription list -- thanks! I read your great article re the effects of the bomb. VERY impressive and thank you for doing this. The public needs to know the gruesome facts. WE are TOO comfortable! Best to you and good wishes."

"I agree with your fair comments directed at these people who are playing a very dangerous game without having the majority ruling. Look forward to receiving your letters..."

"Up until reading details provided at your site about the Cassini mission, I was all for it. Thanks for telling the "other side" of the story."

"I read your detailed, lengthy description of what happens when there is a nuclear blast. Including what happens to sensitive, electronic devices, as a result. I don't think you exaggerated; it is difficult for people, however, to realize (and admit) the horror while there is still time. I hope I can be of sufficient help."

"I would like to subscribe. I have followed the site for a long time. I admire the strong elements of good and truth associated with the site. THIS IS THE FIRST I'VE HEARD ABOUT DU WEAPONS BEING USED IN YUGOSLAVIA. NOBODY KNOWS! IT'S BEEN TOTALLY HUSHED UP. I'M APPALLED!"

"You obviously have done much homework on this subject and I'd like to hear more of your personal views."

"Thank you for keeping up on the story."

"Keep the Faith and thanks for being there for all of us. "

"Thanks for keeping us all informed. I hope that the skies remain clear. Good wishes from New York."

"May you have strength in your sword arm."

"I have to hand it to you...you keep going when anyone else would've given up long ago."

"Man, you are the Mother of All Debaters!"

My grateful thanks to all these people and many more who have written all such undeserved letters of encouragement to the Editor. If all of them are sending letters to the press as well, I think that is why we might be almost succeeding in some things, if indeed, Giuliano is right about that, which I am very pessimistic about, frankly. There are NO official statements to coincide with his claims that things are getting better. No official has said a thing that I've heard or read that would indicate Giuliano is correct. If he has official sources for his claims it would be nice if he would provide them.

If we've made a difference, these contacts might be part of the reason, but I think it is the "first tier subscribers" who have really changed anything (if indeed, anything has changed.) Please use this list IMMEDIATELY to inform these media people that Cassini IS IMPORTANT TO YOU!

Use this list responsibly and ALWAYS use your real name and full physical/postal address every time you contact the media or the government (or anyone else, for that matter!).

(5) What you can do today to stop the Cassini flyby of Earth:

The hour is late: To stop Cassini and other future mad-scientist launches, please redistribute this newsletter to everyone you know! Chances are they have never heard of Cassini, never visited our STOP CASSINI web site, never heard of or considered the effects of the Electromagnetic Pulse that will undoubtedly start a nuclear war if one occurs at all. And chances are good they would not even be able to tell you who played Dr. Strangelove (and two other roles) in the movie of the same name! There is a crisis in education in America and around the world -- you can take it seriously or you can let it kill you. But if we all join together and oppose this impending global destruction, maybe, just maybe, we can convince the powers that be to put down their genocidal toys.

To learn about the absurd excuses NASA used to launch Cassini in 1997, ask them for the 1995 Environmental Impact Statement for the Cassini Mission, and all subsequent documentation. At the same time, be sure to ask them for ANY and ALL documentation available on future uses of plutonium in space, including MILITARY, CIVILIAN, or "OTHER" (just in case they make a new category somehow!). To get this information, contact:

Cassini Public Information
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
4800 Oak Grove Drive
Pasadena CA 91109
(818) 354-5011 or
