Dear Reverend Moore-Kochlacs,

Thank you for your email (shown below).

I would be happy to make a presentation to your congregation about the facts of the case, including the many pieces of information Laura has already been provided with already, which she could have used to write a stronger letter.

Or you could go to my web site and review the information yourself.  Here's the URL:

I don't know if I would be called a "supporter" of EHC.  I do know that my wife and I worked closely with Laura on Naval Nuclear issues for more than five years, and in 1999 we each received their "Difference Maker" award for that work.  I have been working on nuclear issues for more than 30 years.  If you have any questions I will be happy to answer them.  But to accuse me of being "manipulative" simply for including EHC's letter in my own comments is ridiculous!  I appeared before the California Coastal Commission on June 13th, 2001 (EHC was not there).  I implore you to read that statement, and the others I've made since then, in the hopes that you will grasp how little and how late Laura's weak missive really is.  Here's the URL of my California Coastal Commission remarks:

As to your saying my "whining is excessive", please define "whining" and "excessive" as you understand them.  Also, please tell me what your actual level of knowledge about nuclear issues is.  Because your letter appears to be highly out of proportion to the situation.  Closing San Onofre is the most important thing we can do in SoCal to reduce our vulnerabilities, not just to terrorism, but to a wide variety of other catastrophes.  And it won't happen unless the people demand it.

The truth is, there aren't a whole lot of people who understand the full situation.  Among those that do, they are hardly merely "whining", and no amount of crying out on their part would be excessive.

Thank you again, and I hope you will investigate the matter more thoroughly.

Sincerely,

Russell Hoffman

Russell,

As a supporter of EHC, I believe Laura wrote a thoughtful letter, especially in the context of EHC's mission. Putting her letter at the end of your email is manipulative and inappropriate if you were interested in any kind of intelligent or thoughtful reflection.
I know of no other group in the city or County that has done the excellent work they have on issues dealing with environmental racism, toxics and the military. Your whining is excessive.

Yours, The Reverend Peter Moore-Kochlacs, Director of Environmental Ministries of Southern Calif.; UMC; Southern Calif. Ecum. Council; NCC
