Dear Readers,
If you've attended a Nuclear Regulatory Commission or Department of Energy public hearing in the last few decades, you know that if people aren't under oath, they'll say ANYTHING. (They might lie under oath, too, but it is considered less likely.)
President Bush has offered to let Karl Rove and others testify to a Congressional committee about the gang-firing of Carol Lam and the other U.S. attorneys. But Rove and the others will NOT be under oath, their testimony will NOT be recorded, and NO transcription will be made.
That sounds about as useful as an NRC or DOE hearing, to me -- utterly useless! One wonders why ANYONE would bother.
Additionally, the hearings will be closed to the public -- the very hearings President Bush says will occur specifically so that the public will "hear the truth about why these decisions were made." How's THAT going to work, Mr. Bush? Magic?
Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez wrote the infamous "torture brief" which has caused so much trouble overseas. My previous newsletter, on the subject of torture, was published online in at least two places: AlJazeerah.info, and OpEdNews.com. The OpEd News URL contains links so that you can contact your Congressperson and demand that our military take a humane approach to ALL our prisoners.
In light of my comments being published in AlJazerrah.info, I found it very interesting that the U.S. Government announced yesterday that someone in Gitmo has suddenly confessed to being THE planner of the U.S.S. Cole bombing. I guess they want to tell everyone that thumbscrews really do work, after all -- you just have to leave them on long enough and tighten them down hard enough.
So again, I am ashamed for my country.
Thanks,
