IF AMERICA'S NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS had been targeted on September 11th, it could have resulted in 10s of millions of deaths and unspeakable suffering. Why are these plants still open, still creating mountains of deadly radioactive waste? Both the plants and their waste are extremely vulnerable to terrorism, accidents, and other foreseeable catastrophes.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the nuclear industry got lucky last time. Yet they are doing virtually nothing to protect us after the horrific "wake-up call". Why not? The answer is this: PUBLIC INDIFFERENCE! When's the last time you worried about nuclear power enough to get out and DO something, like write a letter to your local paper's editor, or to your congressperson?
Let's tell the politicians we are no longer indifferent! We woke up, and we want them to, too.
Announcing the 11th Day, 11th Hour Protest
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of every month, contact your elected representatives and tell them to SHUT DOWN the nukes and SWITCH to renewable energy. Make Boeing build windmills. Make General Electric build solar panels for roof-tops, and light-bulbs that are energy-efficient and last for decades. Make General Motors build magnetic-levitation mass transit systems. Make Electric Boat build wave and tidal energy systems. These technologies exist; only the will-power is missing. Demand a switch away from oil, coal, and worst of all nuclear, and to renewable energy solutions: Wind, wave, tide, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, biomass, etc. etc.. All these technologies are currently feasible; let's use them.
We have to demand peace. We have to demand justice, not war. We have to demand that the World Bank cancel the "Third World Debt" as a gesture of love to the planet. We have to demand that tensions be reduced around the globe, by increased sharing and cooperation, and by public trials of those charged with crimes against us, not by summary executions using secret hunter-killer teams of unaccountable Special Forces, and not by wholesale slaughter of civilians either.
If we don't solve a whole lot of problems quickly, terrorism will inevitably increase in size, scope, and frequency.
Think about how much worse 9-11 could have been if each plane had attacked a nuclear power plant. Then, try to do something about it.
