Subject: Make Y2K a family day: STOP CASSINI #160

Date: August 2nd, 1999

Time Frame: Cassini is scheduled to do the flyby of Earth August 18th, 1999 (August 17th in the USA) near Africa.

Today's Subjects:

(1) Letter from Hans Karow to Daniel Goldin, NASA:

Hans Karow is a farmer who lives in Canada. Farmers are particularly at risk from Cassini because their livelihood depends on clean soil, air, and water.

This is Hans' busiest time of the year, and crops don't wait for flybys, but he has taken the time to help tremendously on many STOP CASSINI projects, and we thank him once again for this his latest powerful effort to try to get NASA to at least ACT as if they intended to answer all questions from all comers, like an honest agency should.

Dr. Daniel Goldin, Head of NASA

with copies as indicated and to other interested parties

August 2, 1999

Dear Dr. Goldin,

Re: Cassini high risk Earth fly-by

Following e-mails I have sent to your NASA agency responsible for information about the Cassini mission and the nuclear safety.

So far I have not received any response to my specific questions and I kindly ask you, Dr. Goldin, to look into this matter as soon as possible, preferred still in the beginning of this week.

So far the concerned groups and individuals world-wide, including eminent authorities, MUST assume, that NASA is hiding and lying to the general public!

NASA's original mission statement, as quoted from page A-4 of NASA Pocket Statistics, 1995 edition, "Declaration Of Policy And Purpose" reads: "Sec. 102 (a) The Congress hereby declares that it is the policy of he United States that activities in space should be devoted to peaceful purposes that benefit all of mankind."

The Cassini mission DOES NOT fit into this mission statement!

All claims from NASA, that the Cassini mission "does pose no undue threat to public health and safety" I have refuted and rebutted in my previous e-mails to Mrs. Sandra Dawson, including in some special referrals (Emergency Resolution, Emergency Petition, Facts about Cassini's Plutonium) in my e-mails as well as in my letters to the Canadian Government.

As head of NASA you are asked to prove that there are no grounds for fear and worry. However I kindly ask you to prove NOT with the usual generalizing statements but with specific referrals, and to NAME the panels, scientists and medical doctors of studies/tests/findings NASA is referring to, so the concerned site can further study the safety and draw its own conclusions.

I also ask you to make the Safety Evaluation Report (SER) available in the Internet!

Cassini is an unnecessary hazard due to it's nuclear payload, where safe alternatives, solar technique AND non-nuclear fuel cells, could have replaced the energy source from plutonium for the Cassini deep space mission.

According to Space News, March 1994, p. 3, NASA's chief scientist stated that you, Mr. Goldin, would have preferred to cancel the Cassini project because of "enormous risk factors". I wonder why you did not.

With true concern, a former space missions enthusiast,

Dear Mrs. Dawson,

This is to confirm my telephone message to your office today that the Cassini Redirection Coalition is in the process of preparing a PR to be published very soon. I was hoping to include your response, which I have not received yet despite the time urgency. In our telephone conversation recently you indicated that you were preparing a response and I asked you to contain the statements, you presented to me via phone, in writing in your e-mail response as well.

Due to the timely urgency (Cassini's scheduled Earth fly-by only 2 1/2 weeks away) I asked you to send your response by e-mail rather than by postal mail.

No answer from NASA will be considered as "no refutation / no rebuttal" of the OPEN LETTER, for which our Coalition has received support from concerned parties world-wide.

I have asked and I am still asking for an immediate honest open dialogue to serve the rights, interests and well being of the innocent.

Sincerely,

Hans Karow

OPEN LETTER TO NASA

July 23, 1999

Dear Mrs. Dawson,

Re: Cassini high risk Earth fly-by due to its nuclear fueled payload

As you know I have become very concerned about the planned nuclear fueled Cassini swing-by after I have studied the Cassini's nuclear safety in depth not only by researching the different info sources from both sides of the controversial issue, but also by contacting myself eminent authorities within the medical and scientific groups (Dr. Helen Caldicott, Dr. Rosalie Bertell, Dr. Carol Rosin, Dr. John W. Gofman, Dr. Michio Kaku, Dr. Earl Budin, Dr. Kai Petzke, Francis Boyle, Lanny Sinkin, to name a few). I am also in steady contact with Professor Karl Grossman and I have seen his video " NUKES IN SPACE" and read his book "The Wrong Stuff".

I however did not succeed yet to contact any scientists or medical doctors from the pro-Cassini site or/and within NASA, who have taken part in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and the Safety Evaluation Report (SER). In NASA's web site I do not see any referrals to scientists or doctors nor any references to specific safety tests and reports (peer reviewed) other than the generalized statements of EIS.

I expressily like to note, that I DO NOT condemn any space missions, in the contrary I fully support them with great interest and enthusiasm as long as there is even NOT a minimal chance for a risk of further contaminating Earth and space with deadly radioactive materials.

Thanks to Grossman's documentary book "The Wrong Stuff" with excellent references I became aware that the Galileo Jupiter orbiting mission could have been performed with solar energy as a power supply instead of plutonium, according to the 1981 NASA-funded JPL report.

This clearly shows, that at that time the public had not been informed about this report before Galileo's launch. Years before the launch Karl Grossman was trying to obtain any of these kinds of reports with the help of the Freedom of Information Act but he was denied (why?) until shortly (about two weeks) after Galileo's launch he received the 1981 JPL report!

Something similar is happening with the Cassini mission, the general public has not been told the full and true story with regards of the nuclear safety issue, including to inform about the opponents specific concerns. But NASA is demanding from the general public to use NASA's own PR as the ONLY source for the "full" and "true" story of related issues.

Following are a few questions with referral to some Internet links I kindly ask you to open and readindicated articles in those links.

QUESTIONS:

1. Mrs. Dawson, I kindly ask whether you / NASA are aware of and know about the contents of Karl Grossman's "The Wrong Stuff" book and "NUKES IN SPACE II" film. What is your / NASA's position to both these documentaries? Does NASA accept/agree with Grossman's findings and statements in both documentaries?

2. In an earlier e-mail to your office

I asked you/NASA to please comment to Russell D. Hoffman's article "An Answer to a JPL document regarding Cassini's nuclear payload" (see http://www.animatedsoftware.com/cassini/jpltruer.htm )

I again ask: "Is Mr. Hoffman right in his Truer statements? Please comment on these".

3. In my last e-mail

-----Original Message-----

From: Hans Karow [SMTP:core@vip.net]
Sent: July 19, 1999 2:06 PM
To: 'sdawson@mail1.jpl.nasa.gov'
Subject: RE: FW: Cassini mission

I referred to SER, which states contradictions to NASA's EISs. For instance, NASA's claims that the Plutonium containers "were designed to withstand re-entry" into our atmosphere (FEIS p. 2-17, 20 et al.), whereas SER noted that they were NOT designed to withstand the heat of an accidental re-entry at the planned fly-by speed of over 10 miles per second (p. 3-24).

a) Could you please comment on this contradiction and why NASA does not mention about the SER's findings with regards of the safety of the plutonium containers in case of Cassini's re-entry accident.

b) Could you please provide the web site where I can download the complete SER? My attempts over the phone to ask for a copy of SER are so far in vain. I was asked to come to NASA's library (I live in British Columbia, Canada). Why are important information not made easily available via internet to the general public?

3. In your last e-mail (July 19, 1999 2:22 PM) you stated "These [EISs] studies, especially the one on the Earth Swingby, have been reviewed by several independent panels of nationally recognized experts in the fields such as spacecraft engineering, space physics, health physics, meteorology, astronomy, etc. They all agreed the risk is very low..." I kindly ask for copies of/or web sites containing the reviewed work of all related Cassini safety issues of these panels and experts as soon as possible. At the same time I also ask for the names, phone/fax numbers as well as the e-mail addresses of these panels AND nationally recognized experts, so members of the concerned groups can contact them for more information and reassurance.

5. You are aware that I am a member of the Cassini Redirection Coalition (CRC). Our mission is, together with other Anti Cassini groups world-wide, to inform the public and to work towards the prevention of Cassini's Earth fly-by as well as ALL future nuclear fueled space missions (civilian/military) involving risks (never mind how small) of possibly contaminating Earth and space with nuclear materials. With the help of other authorities I was able to co-ordinate the UN Emergency Petition available at

http://www.nonviolence.org/noflyby/alerts/petun.htm

http://www.animatedsoftware.com/cassini/petition/cass1999.htm

and the UN Emergency Resolution available at

http://www:nonviolence.org/noflyby/alerts/reso1999.htm

http://www.animatedsoftware.com/cassini/petition/reso1999.htm

I kindly ask you/NASA to inform me of any statements in the petition and resolution that are not correct.

6. Since the most important facts about plutonium were not easily available and understandable for the general public, with the help of others I have co-ordinated the article "Facts about Cassini's Plutonium" also available at

http://www.animatedsoftware.com/cassini/nltrs/nltr0139.htm

I kindly ask you/NASA to correct any wrong statements within this article.

7. As part of Dr. John W. Gofman's response to my letter to him I received his "Letter of Concern" (available at

http://www.ratical.org/radiation/CNR/LetterOfConcern.html ).

Referring to Dr. Gofman's letter, referring to "The probability of a single atom of Plutonium causing cancer" (SER 3-12), and also referring to a very important fact -omitted from the SER (and from all of the Environmental Impact Statements by NASA)- that each kilogram of Plutonium contains trillions of Plutonium atoms, it must be concluded that the estimated tens of fatal cancers (in SER, compared to nearly zero in NASA's EIS) could actually be millions of cancer deaths if the Plutonium enters a large metropolitan area.

However, this is still understating the environmental impact of Plutonium: Plutonium-238 is radioactive for over 800 years (Plutonium-239: 240 000 years) harming any living, whether human, animal or plant, that it enters, also meaning as many times as it changes its living host (see "Facts about Cassini's Plutonium", question 6. above)

I kindly ask for your/NASA's position/comments to these fact.s

8. The late Dr. Karl Z. Morgan stated in sworn testimony, that NASA has assured him that SNAP-9A had a "one in ten million" chance of a re-entry failure. Yet it happened, spewing 2.1 pounds of plutonium (mostly 238) into the environment.

Alan Kohn was Emergency Preparedness Officer on the Ulysses and Galileo missions. He spoke out against Cassini prior to the launch.. Dr. Michio Kaku calculated Cassini's failure with 10%, which failure rate increased with four other recent space missions. NASA predicts still a "one in a million" chance of re-entry, which was not calculated but purely guessed. ((Note again: SNAP-9A had a "one in ten million" chance of re-entry failure!)

I kindly ask your/NASA's position/comments to these statements .

9. In the case of the Galileo Jupiter orbiting mission and referring to the 1981 NASA-funded JPL report (which states that solar could have been used instead of plutonium) why did NASA not opt for the SAFE solar alternative?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I very much hope to have an open dialogue with you/NASA until I have been proved that my worries about the space missions' nuclear safety, especially within the Cassini mission, are unfounded, so I can -again- fully support and enjoy all space missions.

Looking forward for your immediate response,

Yours sincerely,

(2) Cassini Vigil planned for August 11th, 1999:

Vigils are good. They give us an opportunity to contemplate our possible fates and what we can do to protect ourselves and those we love (all of humanity, I hope):

----- INCOMING EMAIL TO THE STOP CASSINI EDITOR -----

Hi Russell D.-

Thanks for maintaining your Cassini site. It has been an inspiration for the new site I am posting. I would appreciate your feedback and support, if possible!

http://www.cassinidayvigil.com

Sincerely,

Michelle McGee

----- END OF INCOMING EMAIL -----

We deeply appreciate Michelle's kind words, and she has a beautiful little idea and a well-designed web site.

In addition to our STOP CASSINI web site, her site links to a clueless Scientific American web page on Cassini from before the launch. As mentioned in the last newsletter, another article is apparently due out soon (August 10th, 1999). Considering this pointless "we did an article too!" trash from America's Scientific Journal of Record (since 1845), it seems unlikely that we will get an honest look at the facts next week. (Note: David Grinspoon, eat your heart out. I'm guessing again. I'm not clairvoyant (as far as I know).)

(3) Trajectory Correction Maneuvers (TCMs)

According to this web page:

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/cassini/msnstatus/1999.html

Cassini's 11th Trajectory Correction Maneuver which was scheduled for August 2nd according to NASA/JPL's most recent press release, was originally scheduled for August 3rd or has been rescheduled for August 3rd. I hope NASA's engineers know which it is.

This TCM and the next TCM (TCM-12) (as well as the last TCM (TCM-10)) each have (had) a duration listed of 2 hours. But those are two hours of intermittent firings of very small engines. They are in fact, very small course corrections. The probe is "biased" away from Earth by a tiny fraction of a degree of arc. In short, it is practically aimed right down our throats.

TCM-12 is scheduled for August 11th, 1999. On that day, if the "duration" is longer than expected, Cassini could be aimed towards Earth. Rocket motors in the past have fired for too long, so it wouldn't be the first time. If TCM-11, scheduled for today (or perhaps tomorrow) was/is likewise overdone -- or perhaps even if the software accidentally combines TCM-11 and TCM-12 and does both now, Cassini could then be aimed towards Earth (a recent military rocket upper stage did just that sort of thing, turning its payload into useless space debris by doing so).

So, right now Cassini could be improperly aimed towards Earth. Maybe its sensors will tell NASA scientists where exactly it is. Maybe they will analyze the data properly to be sure. Then again maybe not. NASA has made lots of mistakes before, this might be the time they REALLY goof up! I believe it was Astronaut Wally Schirra whom I heard say that rockets are generally "off course" about 97% of the time. By a little bit, of course. Everything is like that -- planes, boats, cars -- everything that doesn't run on rails or by magnetic levitation tracks is seldom exactly on a desired course. (That's one reason trains and mag-lev systems are so safe, and are the preferred form of mass transit for the next millennium.)

If Cassini goes off course for any reason, maybe NASA would be able to correct its flight path. But maybe not. The point is, Cassini can fail ANY TIME. RIGHT NOW, or any time in the next few weeks. Cassini is capable of being thrown off course by a tiny fraction of a degree of arc from any number of things. That's all it would take to aim Cassini directly at EARTH. This is a fact NASA cannot change and should not deny.

Here is what NASA says is worth the extreme risk to human lifeforms on SPACESHIP EARTH:

I have no idea why this page doesn't link to the STOP CASSINI web site:

(4) Y2K and Nukes: Short list of what to do to prepare:

(NOTE: This statement has been updated and moved to its own URL as part of our Y2K Alert web pages:
http://www.animatedsoftware.com/environm/no_nukes/y2k/safe_y2k.htm

Y2K is coming. Various reports indicate that from 18% to perhaps 30% of Americans are getting prepared. They are being told to prepare as they would for a hurricane, earthquake, tornado, etc. But it could be much, much worse. A toxic cloud from a meltdown is more like World War One's Mustard Gas. An accidental World War is like World War Two's awful atomic weapons. And World War Three's Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) could destroy all communications (also from an accidental launch). All this could greet us in the new year, all at once. Or we can become prepared.

What can you do?

First, WRITE YOUR CONGRESSPEOPLE! Tell them you want America to protect itself properly! Then, take the following MINIMUM precautions:

Stock up on water. You will need a gallon a day per person, minimum. Unrinsed bleach bottles should be filled and dated on the outside, and placed all around the house. Bottled water purchased now has dates well past Y2K. 100 gallons per person is the absolute minimum you should try to have. Remember, many of your friends won't do this, and you will probably want to share your precious supplies. Look at your neighbor's young son or daughter and ask yourself if you could deny that person lifegiving water just because their parents did not properly prepare. Start buying water NOW, because it takes a lot of work to put away a couple of hundred gallons of water. If you own property, bury some water tanks.

Stock up on food. A few months' supply would not hurt. Try to purchase foods you don't need to cook. Try to purchase foods you like to eat anyway. If everything works out, you can give it to charity or eat it in 2000.

Stock up on medical supplies and vitamins. Do these things NOW, not later! The average grocery store has a THREE DAY supply of food. November might be dicey, December WILL be ugly. No matter what anyone says now, come December, people everywhere WILL be preparing for Y2K as though it might be the mother of all disasters (which it might). So YOU should prepare TODAY instead. Cassini arrives in just over two weeks, but Y2K awaits not all that long thereafter. If you take prescription medication, get as much as you can and still use it by the time the expiration dates come up. Those dates are very conservative: Consider getting even more medications if your life (or happiness) depends on it.

Purchase potassium iodide tablets -- enough for at least a month for your whole family. These may become VERY hard to acquire so DO THIS NOW.

Get cash. Small bills. If all you have is 100's, you'll end up paying 100's for things that other people are paying 20's for -- like loaves of bread.

Gas up your car if you have one. Pump up your bicycle tires, have numerous extra tires and tubes and patch kits on hand Buy a bike trailer and stock it with a week's worth of essentials (mostly water, and food). Know your exit routes. If you live near a nuclear power plant (like YH&OS), or in any major metropolis, be packed and ready to leave on New Year's Eve. If you must evacuate, watch out for thugs and drunks. If you can be somewhere far away from other people for Y2K, do so. The worst thing that will happen is you'll have a quiet vacation.

Parents: Keep Your Children Home. Especially the older ones -- the ones home from college, not to mention the ones home from jail.

Make Y2K a family day. Make preparing for it a family project.

Let your friends and neighbors know you are preparing, and try to encourage them to do so as well. But you may want to be discreet about some of the particulars, like how many guns or how much ammo you're stocking -- if any -- or how much cash, or where the cash is. But the greater good WILL be served if everyone talks about it. But note: Criminals WILL be expecting most houses to be feasts for their sticky fingers this year! So put in a good alarm system.

Buy vacuum food packing equipment NOW, for example, so different family members and neighbors can borrow it and so you can learn how to use it to store grains, cereals, and so forth.

Buy a wind-up shortwave radio. Only a shortwave radio will bring you unedited news from around the world. Have solar-powered or wind-up equipment for lighting, pumping, cooking, etc.

Stock up on mason jars -- start canning vegetables, jams, jellies, etc. Choose organic, vegetarian foods.

Document all your financial statements. Not that money will be worth anything after Y2K, but it might -- you never know.

Back up all your data onto multiple CD-ROMs. CD-ROMs can survive an EMP (although there will be nothing to play them on for a while).

Unplug your computers and radios and everything else, and place them in metal containers -- preferably well grounded -- such as filing cabinets (of course, don't let any part of the equipment touch the surrounding container with any conducting material!)

Have some champagne. If it makes you feel like you're one with the Universe, turn on the Television and watch the ball drop and the revelers party. Hug and kiss everyone around you, and hope everything keeps working.

Go to bed.

Get up to the first day of the new millennium. Destroy your television set.

If all goes well, your biggest problem will be the same as your biggest problem last New Year's: Learning to write the new date without having to think about it. You won't have to buy food (or water) for months and by destroying your television, you will actually be able to get out and experience YOUR new millennium, instead of one programmed for you by others!

But what if all doesn't go well? The government fears civil unrest. I do too. But I fear the government even more. I fear they will do nothing, because they ARE doing nothing!

Here are the Government contact points for Y2K questions and comments: Contact them TODAY and tell them you don't want any meltdowns or any accidental nuclear wars! Tell them that purposeful nuclear wars are not to your liking either!

Please read the following and pass it on, and please don't be like so many at the top level of our Government are, who pretend that THE PEOPLE of America don't know -- don't even have a RIGHT to know -- the real score about the dangers we face.

Many of us DO know and are FED UP, and want the Government to at least know that we died -- if we must die, from YOUR (the Government's) inaction -- with our eyes wide open. (5) What you can do today to stop the Cassini flyby of Earth:

The hour is late: To stop Cassini and other future mad-scientist launches, please redistribute this newsletter to everyone you know! Chances are they have never heard of Cassini, never visited our STOP CASSINI web site, never heard of or considered the effects of the Electromagnetic Pulse that will undoubtedly start a nuclear war if one occurs at all. And chances are good they would not even be able to tell you who played Dr. Strangelove (and two other roles) in the movie of the same name! There is a crisis in education in America and around the world -- you can take it seriously or you can let it kill you. But if we all join together and oppose this impending global destruction, maybe, just maybe, we can convince the powers that be to put down their genocidal toys.

To learn about the absurd excuses NASA used to launch Cassini and its 72.3 pounds of plutonium in 1997, ask them for the 1995 Environmental Impact Statement for the Cassini mission, and all subsequent documentation. At the same time, be sure to ask them for ANY and ALL documentation available on future uses of plutonium in space, including MILITARY, CIVILIAN, or "OTHER" (just in case they make a new category somehow!).
