Mr. Nyquist,
Regarding your request (shown above) for a retraction and your statement that I have put words in your mouth: You wrote about me, '"Better Red than dead" is your slogan.' Clearly, this labels me a communist. However, of far greater importance than whether you called me a commie or not are the many other inaccuracies in your original article and in your response to my comments. You have put numerous words in my mouth. Here are some statements YOU need to correct:
1) You said there 22 operational nuclear power plants in Serbian Yugoslavia -- the NATO attack zone. Name them. Point them out on a map (so the CIA has it, for instance, lest they cause someone to accidentally bomb one). As documented in newsletter #132, I could only find evidence of one research reactor (near Belgrade), which had been shut down for years. That is very different from an operating reactor.
2) The effects of a nuclear EMP above the U. S. would be much as I have described. This you should acknowledge instead of blandly ignoring what any decent level of research can confirm. This is NOT a game of who can puff up their chest the most. It is a game of lives -- millions of them. In the flick of a button more lives can be wiped out than Caesar, Alexander and Napoleon together ever ruled.
3) You said Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) weapons have already been used in Yugoslavia. Document this -- what are the names of these weapons, and compare their yields to those of nuclear EMPs, and tell us what targets have been hit and how the weapons were delivered? You say you want to stick to the facts -- provide some.
4) You have condemned me for the numbers I supposedly claimed would die in a nuclear exchange, yet the only number I mentioned was specifically given as a guess. It's ALL the devil's guesswork and you should acknowledge not only how wrong YOUR guesses could be, but also, how devastating it would be if indeed, your flat-out guesses are wrong. At least if I'm exaggerating (which I emphatically deny) no one gets hurt. If your descriptions minimize, not just the LIKELY effects, but also the POSSIBLE (as in, perfectly plausible) effects (which I emphatically assert you are doing), the result may be that the war will be committed because most people had no idea how bad what they were getting into could be. Minimizing the perception of the actual danger is a crime against humanity and against civilization, not to mention against democracy. And I accuse you of having committed this crime. My accurate descriptions of what might happen, you blithely claim are inaccurate. Minor corrections notwithstanding, my de
scriptions are orders-of-magnitude more accurate than yours. Yes, there may be only a limited nuclear exchange. But it may not be so limited as you describe. And furthermore, what REALLY separates THIS nation from yours -- er, I mean, Russia -- is that we are UNITED. The Soviets broke up, remember? That is IMPOSSIBLE here. The Union will NOT dissolve. So an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. Woe to the nation which would begin such an attack! If we resort to nuclear weapons, it will at first appear to be the easy way out. Too often lately, America has taken what appears right now to be the easy way out, as with the (now concluding, we hear) bombing of Yugoslavia, and as with the bombing and sanctions against Iraq. Too often lately, our goal is to bring down a vengeful-God-like-wrath upon any city-state, nation, or even any town or single person who attacks us in any way we perceive as important, without our so much as getting a bloody nose. What is the true purpose of THIS strategy? To
save American soldier's lives, and it is working. American soldier's lives are being spared from dying in wars we should not be fighting! It is too easy to fight a war where one side is devastated and yet no one on the other side dies, or at least, no more than might die in a similarly-sized training operation.
(As an example, even the most cursory analysis of the reasons Saddam Insane invaded Kuwait indicate beyond question that he was led to believe, by official American contacts, that he would NOT be challenged by the U. S. should he choose to commit such an invasion. Now, admittedly, he shouldn't have done it anyway, although Iraq does in fact have some legitimate territorial claims to territory occupied by Kuwait. It was a clear case of entrapment of a madman, which cost a hundred thousand Iraqi soldiers their lives, a few hundred Americans theirs, and since the war, perhaps a million Iraqi civilians have died from sanctions and hundreds if not thousands of Iraqi soldiers have probably been killed in the endless bombing runs that now go unnoticed on the corporate-controlled nightly news broadcasts. Depleted Uranium will cause deaths and illnesses for generations, among noncombatants who have not even been born yet!
Where is the moral authority to prosecute such a war, which no one here even notices is occurring?)
5) You have STILL not described WHY or HOW your "limited" war would end. You have offered NO proof -- reasonable or otherwise -- to indicate that a nuclear engagement with Russia could be of a limited nature. NONE, and yet your whole argument rests on that premise. I see no end once the first missile is launched using your strategy and your way of thinking, and that's what scares me. The fact that you have envisioned (or imagined, or perhaps "dreamed up") an end to the conflict apparently allows you to envision a beginning, and what you consider to be a reasonable amount of "survivability". If there were, say, a total of 7 nuclear weapons on each side, your position would have some validity. But there are more like 20,000 nuclear weapons on each side, and so your position is absurd without some sort of description of what exactly would stop a nuclear war -- especially a nuclear war which includes your glorious tribute to perfect computer accuracy: "launch on warning".
You would kill millions or tens of millions, or even hundreds of millions of people, or (dare I say it?) billions of people, because a computer or higher-ranking officer told you to. That is what Launch on Warning means. That is M.A.D.
6) You said that I said "everyone would die" from a nuclear war. I have spent my whole life trying to explain how totally wrong that view is. In short, I have made no such claims. I hope you will have the decency to print a retraction and add a link to my web site for an alternative viewpoint to your previously posted and printed pablum.
7) Document for me, exactly who says "trillions" are being spent on Russian fallout shelters. Not billions. Not a trillion. You said someone reliable said "trillions". Who?
8) You state in your letter to Elizabeth Picard (shown below) that you hope I don't "imagine" you are "some kind of Nazi ogre". I never said you were a Nazi; I don't know what your political beliefs are. So now, WHO is trying to put words in other people's mouths? I implied that things you do have the mark of fascism, things such as censorship (so far, as far as I can tell) at www.worldnetdaily.com of these remarks, and such as your unsubstantiated claims that I have been the one misrepresenting things. Also such as your moving-target behavior, claiming first that I am a commie and then denying it, claiming nuclear power plants would not be an early target and then admitting that the "power grid" would indeed be an early target, claiming the EMP would not destroy operational nuclear power plants (which it would), and of course -- those 22 operational nukes you claim exist under NATO bombardment -- where do you get such "facts", Mr. Nyquist?
And, I stated that I feel you are undemocratic, because you are spreading misrepresentations on which a free and democratic people are expected to take vital, urgent, and expensive action. And I wondered why you are trusting Russian generals, which seems to me to be about the strongest (and worst) commie trait a person could possibly have.
You have much to take back, Mr. Nyquist, yet all you do instead is come to me and demand a retraction for my saying you called me a commie? You did call me one, in terms that are hardly complex or obtuse; once with the left hand (described in #9, below), and once flat-out with the right (as shown in my first paragraph and referred to again in #10, below).
9) You referred to me as "irresponsible and unpatriotic". I consider myself neither. If by your most recent email (shown above) you are taking back the "unpatriotic" part, then state that explicitly. I should also note that in reality, the very thing you claim I am "irresponsible and unpatriotic" about -- building emergency shelter systems, I in fact am FOR, not against! However, to build them for the reasons you give I see as ludicrous at best and dangerous at worst. But if you read what I wrote more carefully you would know that I am FOR America being prepared for any emergency she is likely to face. Your plan is to build nuclear-war fallout shelters in order to make the Russians give up before they even start a war. I think there are vastly better ways to negotiate a lasting peace with the Russians, including increased trade, student exchange programs (by the 10s of thousands), and cultural exchanges of all sorts. These things have eliminated war before, they would do it here.
I'll tell you something about ideology. Whatever "communism" is, I would bet the Russians think of it as a way to run a society so no one gets hurt, and so that honest actions and relationships prevail, and they probably feel that it provides for the common defense, etc.. That is to say, they like it because they believe it will provide for a fair and just society. Or do you feel that the communists all gather around and support something because they feel it will oppress them, and they like the sound of that? I feel pretty oppressed right now myself. As one of the oppressors, I'm sure you wouldn't recognize the feeling. You mistake cries of "oppression!" as "communism!". Cries of "pollution!" as what? A commie plot! Cries that it is IMPOSSIBLE to set off even ONE nuclear weapon (even in retaliation to another one) without committing GENOCIDE of (among others) your own descendants, as WHAT? Communism again! Anything you don't like, what is it? Communism!
Anyone who thinks 20,000 nuclear weapons is 20,000 too many is a communist to you. I ask again: How many people have you thusly labeled in the last ten years? (Oh yeah, now you're denying you said it. Well, I ask again: How many OTHER people (besides me) have you told THEIR motto is "Better Red than Dead" in the past ten years?)
That communism doesn't work very well is something we should feel sorry for them for, but has democracy worked all that much better? Yes, and no! Yes because I can write these words and the only wrath I really worry about over them is yours -- that is, the personal wrath of the intended recipient, which I feel I am well prepared for, emotionally and with facts to back my positions. And I say Yes also, because of 1000 other freedoms I still enjoy here.
But I say No, because of all the freedoms that we once had that have been lost -- eaten away whenever the ACLU (www.aclu.org) and the EFF (www.eff.org) turn their back for a second. Eaten away by the BIG NUCLEAR LIE about low-level radiation dangers, and about real costs, and real options for disposal of nuclear waste, all of which I have written about previously in my newsletter, and which you say (in your letter to Elizabeth Picard) you also oppose. I say No, because of all the video surveillance going on everywhere, because of DNA checks, fingerprint databases, the Clipper Chip and its ilk (like Pentium chip id #s), and all the other privacy issues technology has wrought. I say No because of all the folks who are right now in jail for minor drug offenses, and because of the pollution issues America ignores at her children's peril. I say No because 30 million Americans are functionally illiterate and 150 million do not have ready access to the Internet.
I say NO because Bill Gates has 80 billion dollars -- how much do you have to have to be a Robber Baron these days anyway?
One way to measure how civilized a society is, is to measure the degree of separation between the wealthiest 1 or 2% of a population and the poorest 1 or 2% of the population. That is NOT communist to think like that, it's simply "civilized", but by that score, America is the most uncivilized nation on Earth, ever. We have literally millions among us, who are denied the basic necessities of life. Yet one man has 80 billion dollars. Show me the American justice in that! Schools are frighteningly overcrowded and cannot afford books, let alone modern computers systems, yet several thousand people who work at Microsoft are millionaires in stock options alone, and several dozen are billionaires. Show me America's future in that! More than a million Americans are millionaires, yet more than a ten million CHILDREN in America live below the poverty line. This is the land of opportunity for all?
What opportunity do those children have, when the schools they will go to are dangerous, dilapidated, understocked and understaffed? Is the poverty condition of the schools the fault of the poverty of the students? Of course not. It is America's fault.
10) As to whether you actually called me a commie, you said and I quote, ' "Better Red than dead" is your slogan.' Those were your exact words. Since you haven't taken them back, merely -- I guess this is what you are doing -- exclaiming that you never said them, there is nothing I need to retract. You called me a commie and I answered your absurd charge, and many other absurd statements you made at the same time. If you're saying you were wrong to say such a thing, then we can move on from there, but I think the other items shown above also deserve your efforts, and many, many more contradictions you offered besides, such as how come you think nuclear power plants would be low on the target list. (I offered several reasons (including your own!) why they would be HIGH on the target list.)
Let me add that you accuse me of going off-topic, yet you have failed to explain dozens of specific points I have raised. How many bombs in your ideal little nuclear exchange? What stops your "limited" excursion into human depravity from becoming a big excursion into human depravity? As long as each side has tens of thousands of nuclear weapons, how can you claim there will be an end to it once there is a beginning, before they are all expended? I want PROOF mind you, not more of your heretofore worthless Russian general's opinions! I remind you that essentially ALL Russian generals are oppressors of the Russian (and other) people and enemies of peace, else there would be NO COLD WAR to begin with. Don't you remember which side is supposed to be in this RELUCTANTLY?
And what stops the effects of a single EMP from crippling this nation in a way so devastating, it would in and of itself destroy 99.9% of our ability to achieve success in "the pursuit of happiness", what with immediate nationwide virtually permanent blackouts, meltdowns across the country (there are HUNDREDS of operating reactors in the United States), and of course, the added problem of all the controllers for all the motors for all the pumps which will be permanently busted, so even if fire trucks could somehow get to the fires and operate their equipment, most cities in the United States would have no water at the hydrants or faucets!
What are you going to do when every motor in the country is a dead weight, when every computer is a heap of scrap, no phones, radios, televisions or broadcasting stations working, the Internet unavailable, and even those of us who do manage to hide away a shortwave radio and some batteries, kept protected somehow (there are ways) from the EMP -- even those of us who might have been lucky to have done that, will not know who did this thing to us! Survivors will be angry and want to strike back, but won't know who to strike out at! Any country with even ONE nuclear warhead and ONE missile delivery system can create that level of havoc here with ONE EMP! Yet you think we can do things unilaterally! (I must add, that despite their anger, survivors will in fact have several pressing problems besides wondering who hit them, as I have described in previous emails to you and in recent editions of my newsletter).
I must also note that other nearby countries would also feel the effects of a nuclear EMP above the United States, including Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and so on -- including Cuba. All these places would be devastated and isolated by ONE -- count 'em, ONE -- nuclear EMP above the United States.
You ignore these little problems of your "limited" war, then accuse me of going off-topic when I additionally answer your outrageous and highly offensive (not to mention designed to incite others against me) charge that I am some sort of communist. But what actually happened is, I looked at reality and asked why, while you looked at a dream and called it the future. I charged and continue to charge that your version, your *little* nuclear war, with only 30 to 40 million dead, may be totally inaccurate, and that it is based on ZERO reliable evidence -- in fact, it is just based on what your friends the Russian generals have told you, as far as I can tell, and some RAND studies, neither of which (as far as I know) have ever proven to be reliable predictors of future realities.
I agree with you, there are retractions that need to be made. If you can come up with a valid one for me, I will make the retraction, but right now, the score is at least 0 -- 10 against you and its your turn to clarify and retract as you see fit, for the betterment of society at large and your reputation specifically.
Lastly, as to who cares about what and how much, you say you don't care if I'm a commie or not. Well, Mr. Nyquist, you SHOULD care. If I'm a commie, I hide it pretty well -- even you are denying you even said it! But ANYONE in America with a hidden agenda should be exposed, Mr. Nyquist. And it's not like my voice is totally unheard -- you noticed it yourself, and spent a good deal of time trying to stomp me with your repeated absurdities. We both know others are listening as well. Now (defeated utterly), you try to take back the personal affront of calling me a commie, but in fact you don't even do that -- you accuse me again, this time of misreading your clear and unambiguous statements!
But you have much more than that to answer for. If I'm a commie, then everything I've said has been a lie, because it all had an ulterior and secret motive to destroy America. If you are a true American, with principals based on our Constitution, you should want to expose me now -- always expose people like me! But since I have spoken truthfully and from the heart, there is nothing you can do but meekly proclaim you didn't call me a commie in the first place (even though you did!) and you don't give a hoot one way or the other, even though you clearly have spent some time composing your responses to my statements.
You owe the public a long list of retractions. To be called a commie by you was not terribly painful, it being the icing on the cake of insults to humanity you have committed. Indeed, to be called a communist by such an inaccurate reporter such as yourself is no big deal. I only argued it for the principal of the thing, namely, the principal that truth shall not perish from the Earth in my time, if I can say anything to right it. American principals start with TRUTH above all. And all the various principals we are founded on -- life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, etc. -- they apply to ALL people, not just to Americans, by the way -- but to ALL of humanity. America sees everyone as entitled to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, etc..
That is why in America's view, MAD is mad.

Hello again, Jeff. I just wanted to add. I don't think you and Mr.
Hoffman are in disagreement when it comes to concern for lifeforms in
the nuclear age. I wonder if we have here with so many facts a
situation of ; "one can't see the forest through the trees." In other
words, the risks and motivations, intentions of those involved in any
form of nuclear energy or its by-products if not preservative towards
any future or benefit to humanity. The future cannot be predicted;
intervention on ignorant use of nuclear power is all any concerned
citizen can do. In that respect, I believe you and Mr. Hoffman are on
the same team. Am I right?

Internet reveals solar explosion's target
Astronomers did not know if it was heading our way

A tremendous explosion took place on the surface of the Sun last
Tuesday and for a few very nervous hours astronomers did not
know whether it was heading for Earth.
The blast threw a jet of superheated plasma carrying magnetic
energy into space at speeds of 1,000 kilometres per second (600
miles per second).
However, using the speed of the Internet, astronomers around the
world rapidly compared images and decided that a worldwide alert
was unnecessary.
The explosive event was "a real planet-buster", according to Dr
Richard Fisher of Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Centre.
If the magnetic energy within the cloud of superhot gas had
interacted with the Earth's magnetic field it would have sparked
spectacular aurora at polar latitudes.
But more worryingly it could also induce power blackouts, block
radio communications and trigger phantom commands capable of
sending satellites spinning out of their proper orbits.
Cellular phones, global positioning signals and space-walking
astronauts were all at risk.
