Subject: : World Press Freedom Day -- STOP CASSINI #119
Date: May 3rd, 1999
Time Frame: There are 52 days left until the flyby of Venus, 7 weeks before the flyby of Earth.
Today's subjects:
"Press freedom day to be marked
"BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- A Turkish reporter covering a funeral is flogged to death by police. An Algerian journalist is shot three times in the head while in his car. A Russian news director is fatally beaten, his briefcase emptied of sensitive documents.
"They are among the brutal crimes committed against journalists that will be remembered today -- World Press Freedom Day -- at the start of a two-day U.N.-sponsored conference highlighting dangers to the press worldwide."
It's no picnic out there for those who seek to show the world the truth.
"NEW YORK (AP) -- Slobodan Milosevic, Jiang Zemin and Fidel Castro topped the list of "Enemies of the Press," released Sunday by the Committee to Protect Journalists."
Dr. Joan Russow asked me to let you know that she will be attending the convention in The Hague/Netherlands from May 11 to 21.
Joan will do her best to have the Cassini issue presented.
She is going to take along Karl Grossman's "NUKES IN SPACE II, Unacceptable Risks" (a video documentary that tells the story of the Cassini plutonium-fueled space probe, which just recently received the Silver Award at the 32nd annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival.
I know that some of you are going to The Hague as well. Joan invites you to contact her there.
Feel free to contact her via e-mail : jrussow@coastnet.com and write in the subject box "CASSINI / The Hague", then she knows right away one/some of you will contact her there.
In this clip regarding the recent third Titan IV failure, note especially the event at T + 62 minutes, since today is "World Press Freedom Day":
"The Centaur was to fire three times over the course of 6 hours to put the satellite into a geosynchronous orbit. The first burn at T+11 minutes was to be of one minute duration. The second burn at T+ 66 minutes was to last 5 minutes and 12 seconds. At T+62 minutes the telemetry feed to the press for the flight was cut off. It was later reported that the problems with the orbit were first noted after the first Centaur firing. A USAF source stated that the Centaur completed all three burns, but they were much earlier than the flight plan -- resulting in the $800 million satellite being released 2 hours and 30 minutes into the flight into an elliptical 460 x 3,105 mile orbit."
"The Titan rocket fleet is expected to be grounded pending investigations. The next Titan launch was to be the May 7 launch of a classified payload from Vandenberg (Washington Post)."
And speaking of software, here is one more clip from Frontier Status, this one about Galileo:
Scientists are currently preparing software for Galileo to assure that it does not enter "safe mode" from false power reset indications. The spacecraft entered safe mode twice last year from such occurrences.

I would like to subscribe. I have followed the site for a long time. I admire the strong elements of good and truth associated with the site. THIS IS THE FIRST I'VE HEARD ABOUT DU WEAPONS BEING USED IN YUGOSLAVIA. NOBODY KNOWS! IT'S BEEN TOTALLY HUSHED UP. I'M APPALLED!
Hi!
Thank you for subscribing to the STOP CASSINI newsletter.
I'm amazed, saddened, indeed APPALLED by the fact that the use of D.U. weapons is virtually unknown! But that is what I am hearing, not just from you. I'll be doing more issues on that subject for sure, including a description from the 60's from a U.S. Army (now declassified) document that indicates clearly they have been designing D.U. weapons since then.
Thanks again for subscribing! The current issue will be put online today, and hopefully I'll produce another issue, #117, today as well.

Hi!
Okay, you've been unsubscribed as per your request.
The reason you were subscribed in the first place is because one of the other newspapers in your area published a number of letters about Cassini. Your decision to ignore this issue or at least specifically to ignore my opinions on this issue is of course, yours to make.
But I hope you have at least considered these important issues. I also hope your paper is reporting the truth about D.U. use in the Balkans and similar issues relating to low level radiation pollution around the globe, as it WILL affect virtually everyone sooner or later.
Sincerely,

Dear Sir;
Regarding your email to me, the story idea is simple: We are witness to the destruction of the planet by U.S. old-guard Cold War warriors who abuse the concept of the "peaceful exploration of space" with a catastrophic plan of world domination from manned and unmanned platforms circling the Earth, powered by nuclear reactors and plutonium powerpacks such as those used on Cassini.
Other of your local papers have recently carried several letters about the subject.
If that's not a good enough story idea for you, I'm sorry, but those are the facts.
Sincerely,

Mr. Hoffman: Do not use this email any longer. As you mentioned, there are "other newspapers" who will gladly listen to your rhetoric. This is not one of them.
Scott Pattison
I assume your latest abusive email [shown above] means you are a man who insists on getting the last word, as I made it quite clear in my last email that I was responding personally to what you had "personally" written to me. You are a member of the media, you have a duty to serve the truth and to listen to the public. You said you wanted a story idea. And besides that, you were indeed already removed from the newsletter distribution list.
So be it.
Russell Hoffman
P. S. for the record, I did not say there were any "other newspapers" who would "gladly listen" to my "rhetoric". You made that up -- clearly, reading clearly is not your strong suit. I said other of your local papers had been carrying letters about Cassini. I did not say any of mine had been published.
"Abusive"? Absolutely -- he took out or neglected to include the "Respectfully yours" part!!!
After such painful discharges of my duties to the STOP CASSINI movement as the above items were, simple vanity demands that I publish this next item.

Last issue (#118, earlier today) we quoted a 1966 U. S. Government report called THE US ARMY RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL PROGRAM IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES. The report number was NDL-TR-78 and it is now unclassified and available from DTIC (Defense Technical Information Center), 8725 John J. Kingman Rd, Ste. 0944, Fort Belvoir, VA, 22060-6218.
Here are some samples of the interesting perspectives they had back then -- and still have, but they don't speak so frankly about it in public. Nor did these folks intend for their callous attitude to be on public display or read by anyone other than carefully trained eyes which would excuse all this madness because it was "for the Cold War effort". "FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY" each page says, at the top and the bottom. But there is no excuse for what the Cold War warriors have done to this planet in the name of peace.
FROM PAGE B-19, discussing the PM-3A Naval Nuclear Power Plant at McMurdo Station, Antarctica:
"All gaseous wastes generated to date have been vented to the atmosphere at concentrations below those specified by 10 CFR 20 by diluting them with uncontaminated air."
When possible, liquid waste was similarly given the dilution solution to pollution:
"All liquid waste generated to date has been processed in the radioactive waste disposal system, until the liquid is suitable for reuse or discharge to the environment. The concentrated radioactivity is shipped back to the US for disposal in the form of radioactive sludge."
About 30 lbs per year, gross weight, was "generated annually". The rest was vented to the once-pristine, icy world. Problems abounded:
FROM PAGE B-20:
"At the present time, the preparation of highly radioactive sludge and resins for shipment is a monumental task. The waste shipping container (B of E permit #1706) is a 15-ton cask with internal filter to remove and retain the sludge and resins pumped from the radioactive waste storage tank. Filter failure and equipment freezing have plagued the operation since its inception. Another problem encountered repeatedly, is the failure of equipment during removal of the sludge from the underground storage tank."
Naturally, they had plans in place to solve these problems. Naturally, it is the same solution the U. S. Navy has for everything: STAINLESS STEEL. Without which, the Navy would be sunk. In this case, stainless steel filters were to be used to solve the problem of "filter failure". The fate of the seals was sealed (but not the casks or the caskets).
The seals are still dying, and the whales are too. These animal populations around the world are diminishing not just because of high-speed military boats on "exercises" which cut into their backbones as they surface for air ("Oops! We better check the keel for damage" they might say, if anyone notices) but also because of toxic dumping at sea, including oil, nuclear waste, and every other thing we did not want to carry with us or dump on land.
The editor of this newsletter would wager that of the top 20 environmentally hazardous waste sites created by American somewhere in the world, ALL OF THEM are at the bottom of the oceans, on an area of our precious Earth at the bottom of the seas, not claimed by ANY nation, by convention. But doesn't that just mean it is an area claimed by EVERY nation, and all the people of the world, and all the other creatures, and it is not ANYONE'S dumping ground? So you would think. So what am I missing? Oh yeah, that stupid Cold War thing everyone says is over. The Global excuse for environmental abuse.
For an understanding of why this article appears here, please see newsletter #109 (A Tribute to Valentine Delgado) and especially #85 (Mountain Biking, Nostradamus & Cassini). Let's just say it's one more reminder to all of us, how precious EACH life is, and it is also a reminder that it is OUR decision, not other's (such as the government) as to what risks we wish to take which might endanger our lives. Deer Springs, where this happened, is only a few miles from where my own recent mountainbiking incident (related in newsletter #85) occurred.
PASTOR REMAINS IN COMA
ESCONDIDO -- Members of the Calvary Chapel of Escondido congregation are reeling as news spread that their beloved youth pastor was seriously injured in a mountain biking accident last week. ...
Tony Bonnici, 42 ... remains in a coma at the intensive-care unit at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with major trauma to the head. He is listed in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Saturday.
He had been biking with a friend Thursday...
"He is making small progress," said [his wife] Eden Bonnici. "We want a miracle."...
Mountain biking had been a favorite pastime of Bonnici for several years. He bikes once or twice a week, his wife said.
It was unclear what caused the accident.
The editor of this newsletter is also a 42-year-old mountainbiker. Three strange coincidences? Probably, these incidents happening so close together in time and space are statistically somewhat unlikely, which is of course what makes them so haunting to the editor: try as one might to ignore the possibility that one actually IS lucky, one still has to admit: one feels lucky to be alive. And that's really the whole point. That things happen because statistics can only indicate what MIGHT happen, and statistical analysis of any sort never actually determines what WILL happen. It certainly could have been me, and that would have been that, and newsletter #84 would have been the last one. The editor gets a chill up his spine, gives thanks -- to whom, he doesn't know -- he gives thanks to one God, but any God or all the Gods who might exist might listen (and laugh) -- and then he moves on to other matters. Life goes on amongst the living.
Likewise, Cassini's fancy statistics prove NOTHING about what actually will happen. Even if NASA is right that Cassini has a "one in one million" chance (or better, or worse) of reentering Earth's atmosphere, it nevertheless has too much chance and not enough certainty, when it could have been avoided entirely either by waiting until a full-on solar mission could be accomplished, or by splitting the mission into two or more smaller missions (which by the way, would have given us a much greater likelihood of at least a partial science return!)
Cassini is a game of Russian Roulette which society was not aware it was making. No sane society would risk so much for so little true scientific gain, or would try to promote an honest science gain at all using lies and propaganda, which completely negates the possibility of society taking the actual science return seriously. But that is exactly what NASA has done, as with the misuse (in the 1995 EIS for the Cassini mission) of the 1981 D. E. Rockey JPL report indicating solar options for deep space missions would be not only work, they'd be cheaper, oft-mentioned on these pages, or as with NASA's constantly ignoring the approximately 130 RHU's on board Cassini, and their "1.0 probability" of releasing their 2.7 grams of plutonium 238 dioxide in vaporized form in the event of a flyby reentry accident, also oft-times mentioned here, or as with NASA's Woodrow Smith (a truly scary human being), who "carelessly" stated (in a letter published in newsletter #103) that Cassini's plutonium would have been a risk
on Earth "for 75,000 years or so" (actually most has a half-life of 87.75 years), or as with his stating (in the same letter) that the containment system is "wholly reliable and totally foolproof" -- which is even contradicted in NASA's own 1995 EIS or any other technical NASA document -- or as with any of the other lies and obfuscations that have been committed against society in the name of "the peaceful exploration of space".
It is a game of Russian Roulette played in front of (actually on top of) billions of people, and the gunman hides behind a curtain of lies and a veil of secrecy, as he loads his hundreds of billions of deadly plutonium bullets for distribution into our atmosphere.
It is a game played by idiots, on unsuspecting dupes.

CANCEL CASSINI by JUNE 24th, 1999!
To Cancel Cassini start by asking NASA for the 1995 Environmental Impact Statement for the Cassini Mission and all subsequent related documents (on paper, please!). Tell them you need it IMMEDIATELY (members of the world press should do this too). All citizens of the world are ENTITLED to these documents because of the global threat Cassini poses. Here's where to get information:
Cassini Public Information
NASA states that they do not have the resources anymore to answer most emails they receive. Liars! They have $13 billion dollars to play with. They can answer the public's questions. At least, ask them one specific question: How many letters did they get opposing Cassini today? (And tell them you oppose it too!) If each reader asks them that...
